Note that Google doesn't distinguish between Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) betas and major Android releases - it's the same beta program for both. To begin receiving Android 14 betas over the air, you'll need to enroll your device in the Android beta program. Jesse Hollington / Digital Trends Enroll in the Android beta program In other words, if you go back to Android 13 and want to try the Android 14 beta again, you’ll need to start over from scratch. If the beta isn't working out for you, the only way you'll be able to return to Android 13 is by wiping your phone entirely.Īlso, as Google makes abundantly clear, you won't be able to use a backup of the Android 14 beta once you go back to Android 13. This backup is particularly important when installing the Android 14 beta, as there's no easy way back to Android 13. You can confirm this in our guide on how to back up your Android smartphone. Since we're talking mostly about Pixel phones here, your device is likely already backing itself up to the cloud automatically. ![]() ![]() It's always a good idea to back up your phone before installing any major Android release, and that's doubly true when working with beta releases. Image used with permission by copyright holder Back up your phone You can find instructions for how to install the Android 14 beta on other compatible phones on each manufacturer's website links to these are available from Google's list of supported Android devices. To keep things simple, we're only covering the steps required to install the Android 14 betas on Google's Pixel phones. Supported devices from other partners may also be more limited for instance, the Android 14 beta is available exclusively for this year's OnePlus 11. In most cases, the steps are more complicated than Google's over-the-air updates for its Pixel phones. However, Google will not be providing the Android 14 betas directly for these devices enrollments and support are the responsibility of each device maker, and each has its own unique requirements and process for installing the Android 14 beta on its particular devices. With the release of the second public beta, several other Android device makers opened their own Android 14 beta programs - including OnePlus, Oppo, Nothing, RealMe, and Xiaomi, to name a few. In this case, that's the Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro, and the just-released Pixel 7a. Sorry, Samsung and Motorola fans whether it's developer previews or public betas, Google only makes prerelease Android versions directly available for its Pixel phones. Joe Maring/Digital Trends / Digital Trends Confirm your phone is compatible with Android 14 Nevertheless, whether you want to forge ahead into the world of Android 14 betas today or further down the road, here's how to go about it. Google expects to reach "platform stability" by June, which is the stage where the betas should be more polished and stable as Android 14 moves closer to its final release. We're only at the second Android 14 beta out of several more that are expected to arrive over the next few weeks, and you can jump in at any time. ![]() Google makes it clear that these betas "may contain errors and defects that can affect the normal functioning of your device." Most developers have secondary devices they can install betas on for testing purposes. The recent betas may be more easily available, but they're still intended primarily to help developers get their apps ready. Unless you enjoy living on the edge, we'd recommend steering clear of installing it on any phone you depend on - especially this early in the game. While it's unlikely to blow up your phone, you should still expect glitches, half-baked features, and other oddities at this point in the beta cycle. But don't be fooled by this easy installation process - Android 14 is still beta software, and we're still in the early stages. ![]() While the Android 14 developer previews had to be installed over a wired connection from a PC, public Android 14 betas can be installed over-the-air (OTA), just like any other Android update. By pressing Command-E, you get a fast entry dialog box for entering your answer. Often you only need to make a quick reply to an email thread without any signature at the bottom. It creates a new task and adds a URL to the specific email message. You can send emails directly to OmniFocus by right-clicking the message and select the submenu ‘dispatch’ and choose ‘Create OmniFocus Task,’ and a new task window will appear. No more problems when Apple updates Mail and makes the OmniFocus plug-in stop working. I do all my planning both for work and private projects in OmniFocus so it’s nice to see that there is built-in integration with OmniFocus, a program that I can’t live without. When a new email arrives, you get a nice looking system notification through OS X standard notification system. A great feature because I no longer need to have the mail application showing all the time. The icon works as a toggle, so if you press it, the Airmail application becomes the front application, but if you push it again, the Airmail window disappears. It is black when there is no new mail, but turns blue and shows the number of new emails. Menubar IconĪnother great feature is the small icon in the menubar that shows a little airplane symbol. Very convenient, and cuts down on mistakenly sending email from the wrong return address. to be able to switch between your accounts.ĭepending on the one you chose, Airmail will use the correct reply address and signature specifically for that account. You can either switch by clicking on the small icons on the bottom left column in the application window, but a quicker way is just to use ctrl–1, ctrl–2 or ctrl–3, etc. There is an option to use a unified inbox, but for me, it’s much better to have my work emails separated from my private ones. I have two private email addresses and one for work that I have configured in the application. When setting up several email accounts in Airmail, it’s easy for the user to switch between them. I mean, really fast! I just bought a new MacBook Pro 15″ Retina with a 2.5Ghz Intel i7, so it’s probably not the best computer to pass any judgment on the speed of an application, but my computer at work is a three-year-old MacBook Pro, and Airmail feels very fast on that machine as well. ![]() I’ll go through the things that persuaded me to switch.Īirmail is fast. The feature list is comprehensive to the point of me not wanting to list all the features here, but follow the link to get a lowdown on all the things the application can do. I wanted to be able to have both of my private and work email accounts in the same program but have them separate to make life easier, and after searching the net, I found an application called Airmail. For the first time in many years, I was on the lookout for a new email client software. Anyway, Apple Mail has become a slow, unreliable application although they have fixed some of the more severe problems in the latest release. The blame has to be put on Google for not following standards but is a significant player you can pretty much set your own rules. So they use tags instead of folders, etc. I have my email domain on Google Apps, and I know that Gmail doesn’t follow the IMAP standard, instead choosing to do it their way. It’s weird because the iOS Mail app is rock solid. Airmail, my new favorite mail clientĪfter Mac OS X 10.8, Apple Mail has been going downhill by every update. But hopefully, they’ll fix that in the coming months. In a perfect world, it should have been a universal app. Yay! The only complaint is that they did the app for iPhone only and not an iPad version. It also syncs your settings from your Mac OS X application, so now I have an HTML signature on my iPhone. Now there’s even an excellent version for Airmail for iOS. ![]() And let’s face it, Google changed a lot from the original IMAP standard, so everyone had to keep up. I guess Apple has probably fixed a lot of the problems they had back then when connecting to Gmail. I’m still using Airmail now, two years after I wrote this post. It never crashes, and the search is fast and excellent. Still my favorite email client, and I’m now also blessed with a version for iPad and my iPhone. ![]() ![]() Most businesses aren't based on discovery of anything other than customers for a transaction they already have. This comes up with graph based recommendation engines, which are essentially a surveillance/marketing product based on preferences. Surveillance seems to be their default use case, with open ended scientific research a close second. Imo, they're useful for one-off pattern discovery, and they're most valuable for finding single or a few exceptions and outliers in normalized data, and you need to be in an environment where there are asymmetric returns on finding those. They're really compelling but oddly unpopular. They yield the fastest path through complex problems, and I use them to do in a couple of hours what typically would take client staff months. I use graphs in security and privacy quite a bit, and even built the tech for a hopeful security platform using a graph back end. Graphviz is an amazing tool, it has just suffered from being cloistered to technologists whose jobs aren't to solve the kinds of problems it is specifically adapted for. No doubt there are more details if anyone can remember them. In the worst case, this has to be debugged for all the drivers in Maybe it wore away as waves of open source development washed over it, along with static tables for a bunch of "standard" PS fonts. ![]() There is no question there was once upon time explicit code to try to cope with this problem, at least in the native PSgen, but I can't find it now. Perhaps the loop stops sometimes on the wrong side of the boundary? Anyway, it's equally possible that when the endpoint coord is handed off to a lower level driver, the arrowhead mitering is wrong. If this isn't right, maybe somebody can figure out why. (That, and text with slightly-off baselines.) "Very poor" seems harsh, but, yes, it hurts us, too. credit card processing, because in the end it's more profitable to solve big end customer problems. It's surprising the conventional relational database products don't pay much attention to this opportunity, but they have gone vertical, e.g. It's not hard to understand why that is valuable, but Neo4J sell it as being "efficient for linked structures" (relational databases don't have foreign keys and indices) and "intuitive" (have you ever tried to read the code for graph matching in Cymbal? I rest my case.) They have investments of hundreds of millions? Worth billions? They contributed something valuable to the tech economy. It does something important, mainly, rationalize the mess of graph representations and algorithms. Anyway, gvpr is a modest attempt at a sort of graph query language. It would take more resources, or intensity, than what we had. When we started Graphviz, we vaguely sensed the potential for graph databases or environments, like neo4j, but we didn't work much in that area. ![]() There are many counterfeit devices out there that use the brands and trademarks of other companies illegally, and this is likely another example of that. Relatively few accidents have involved fatalities, with roughly 74 casualties being attributed to accidents and half of these were those involved in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Īt least 57 accidents and severe incidents have occurred since the Chernobyl disaster, and over 56 severe incidents have occurred in the USA. A 30 kilometres (19 mi) " Zone of alienation" has been formed around the reactor. The plume spread in the near distance primarily over Belarus and after that covered extensive portions of Europe with traces of radioactivity, leaving reindeer in Northern Europe and sheep in portions of England unfit for human consumption. The accident occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant after an unsafe systems test led to a series of steam explosions that destroyed reactor number four. Note that the Chernobyl disaster may have scored an 8 or 9, if the scale continued. The world's worst nuclear accident has been the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union, one of two accidents that has been rated as a level 7 (the highest) event on the International Nuclear Event Scale. The 1979 Three Mile Island accident in Pennsylvania was caused by a series of failures in secondary systems at the reactor, which allowed radioactive steam to escape and resulted in the partial core meltdown of one of two reactors at the site, making it the most significant accident in U.S. Because nuclear power plants are large and complex, accidents on site tend to be relatively expensive. ![]() ![]() Property damage costs include destruction of property, emergency response, environmental remediation, evacuation, lost product, fines, and court claims. Globally, there have been at least 99 (civilian and military) recorded nuclear power plant accidents from 1952 to 2009 (defined as incidents that either resulted in the loss of human life or more than US$50,000 of property damage, the amount the US federal government uses to define nuclear energy accidents that must be reported), totaling US$20.5 billion in property damages. An interdisciplinary team from MIT has estimated that given the expected growth of nuclear power from 2005 to 2055, at least four serious nuclear accidents would be expected in that period. Catastrophic scenarios involving terrorist attacks are also conceivable. According to UBS AG, the Fukushima I nuclear accidents have cast doubt on whether even an advanced economy like Japan can master nuclear safety. Mistakes do occur and the designers of reactors at Fukushima in Japan did not anticipate that a tsunami generated by an unexpected large earthquake would disable the backup systems that were supposed to stabilize the reactor after the earthquake. The nuclear power industry has improved the safety and performance of reactors, and has proposed new safer (but generally untested) reactor designs but there is no guarantee that the reactors will be designed, built and operated correctly. |
